the root
- people give everything when they can see the system and trust it pays them back.
the foundations
- visibility. everyone can see how decisions get made.
- trust. everyone starts from respect, in every direction.
- reward. results get recognized by the people who matter, fast.
- belief. everyone feels they're on the frontier.
visibility
- notes are public. decision makers think out loud.
- flat in voice. the youngest person can tell you you're wrong. "an incredibly painful internal structure of flatness." (karp)
- people tolerate limits they can see into. visibility turns "out of my control" into "i have a say."
trust
- challenge the work, never the person.
- trust runs every direction, not just down to a favorite few.
- constant doubt doesn't get said out loud. it gets resignations.
reward
- sharp in ownership. a name on every task.
- every project gets an ending. closure, seen by the people who matter, as soon as it's done.
- reward results through a public system people can point to.
- if the system can't be public, the team has to trust it anyway. with neither, you get skepticism.
belief
- most people can't judge the industry themselves. the culture has to give them conviction.
- frontier, earned. keep everyone close to the hardest problems. share the wins.
